How the body holds grief
Grief is often described as a heavy emotional burden, but its impact extends far beyond the mind. Our bodies play a significant role in experiencing and processing grief, often holding onto it in ways we might not immediately recognize. The tightness in your chest, the lump in your throat, or the exhaustion that lingers for weeks — these physical sensations are the body's way of communicating the emotional pain of loss. Understanding the connection between somatic experiences and grief can demystify and let us know where we need more support.
When we grieve, the body and nervous system react as though we are under threat. The loss of a loved one, relationship, or identity triggers the brain’s stress response, flooding the body with stress hormones like cortisol. This can manifest as physical tension, disrupted sleep, digestive issues, or even chronic pain. These sensations are not "just in your head" … they are real, physical expressions of the emotional turmoil grief brings. By listening to the body, we can begin to understand the depth of our loss and what it needs to heal. Rather than ignoring these sensations or trying to push through them, we can use them as guides to explore the emotional pain they represent.
One powerful way to help your body process grief is through movement, especially dance. Choose a song that resonates with your emotions, press play, and let your body move however it wants for the entirety of the track. There’s no need for choreography or perfection — this is about expression, not performance.
Whether your movements are big or small, fluid or sharp, this practice allows stuck emotions to flow and shift. Dance can provide a profound sense of release, helping the body process what words cannot express.
Grief is not just an emotional experience; it is a full-body one. By acknowledging the ways grief shows up in our bodies, we can approach healing with greater compassion and understanding. This holistic perspective allows us to honor the interconnectedness of mind and body, creating a space where both can find relief. The body’s wisdom is an invaluable ally in the journey through loss, reminding us that healing is not just about moving forward but about learning to carry grief in a way that feels lighter.
